I was invited to be a part of Reanimation Station’s “Batman Reanimated” project: a four month collaborative effort from over 70 animators, reanimating a single episode of the 1966 Batman series.

We had free range to choose our own style, so naturally I went with Lego!

I took inspiration from the style of animation in “The Lego Movie” and “The Lego Batman Movie”. As someone who spent a large portion of their childhood playing with Lego, and adores both of those movies, getting to lovingly recreate those models and textures was a unique kind of fun. The animation was also a fun challenge, in figuring out how to effectively convey emotions without breaking the anatomy of a Lego minifugre (or at least, breaking it in ways that weren’t noticeable).

The Lego wave simulation was created in Maya and Houdini, and was by far the most technically challenging component of the piece. I was moving to Adelaide while creating this, so rendering this simulation from a laptop proved to be quite challenging! Overall I’m very proud of what I created, and how it fits into the episode as a whole.
